Decoding France’s Train Systeme

There is only 1 company: SNCF. Used to be owned by the government but there is some privitization. Types of trains below:

2 Main Types

1) Fast Train on Main Lines to Major Destinations

1. TGV = Train Grand Vitesse, a type of train

  • fastest train
  • they go on the major lines, like Paris-Bordeaux, Paris-Lyon

2. OUI.go = same TGV train but branding is that this is a low cost TGV

2) Slower train on Less Popular Lines to Less Popular Destinations

1. Intercities Trains

-Non-major lines like: Toulouse-Marseille

-looks like a TGV, but moves like a TER (ie: slow)

2. TER = Train Extra Regional (?)

-very local : like Marseille-Cannes

-very slow but goes to many places

That’s it lol
