Been a busy, busy week before and after Lyon… while I was a bit lonely in Lyon, I made up for it with social things before and after eeps!
Finally got to Cécile restaurant in Marché Carmes and mmmmm it met my expectations! Super delicious food and wine and very reasonable! Their lunch formule that day had Tuna tataki and Lamb Keftas – Both excellent! My friend and I shared fish and the magret de canard: omg so delicious and good portions! The cheese plate with 2 Tomme de somethings and Chevre was nice and the dessert was summery and light. Would definitely recommend and go again! The space is minimal and green and reminded me very much of a Melbourne café 🙂 The outdoor seating is covered too!! Afterwards my friend and I had a little noisette @ Le Bar du Matin hahaha such a random and good people watching place 😛
Great Ceviche @ C.viche near Marché Carmes the night before I left Toulouse! I’ve been here before and the chef and staff were just as lovely and the food was just as tasty and good portions! Very impressed with the consistency 😀
Ok and the week back from Lyon…
New flatmate moved in, J, and A was there to welcome him. Good eggs 🙂 The 4 of us, including T and I, get along well and have good times. Haha especially when A made “Gorgonzola sushi”… T is usually really chill and doesn’t react too strongly but even he wouldn’t keep a poker face and looked like he was in pain LOL I assume with the warm, slightly sour rice (from the vinegar) and the melty, strong blue cheese wrapped in seaweed was a bit too… different…. This is the same guy who cooked cucumber thinking it was zucchini HAHA 🙂 He also brings a bowl of water and unwashed cherries and was individually giving them a mini bath just prior to eating them and breaks off a chunk of bread to mop off sauce from his mouth instead of a napkin… full of suprises!
First Euro Cup 2021 soccer (oh sorry, Football) game and unlucky Germany tried to deflect a goal but ended up scoring into their own net! That was the only goal of the game… eeps!
Lunch @ Haozai with my friends was nice to catch up! It was shady outside so we were able to still be dining outdoors 🙂 I finally tried their 5 spice calamari but I didn’t know it was fried… eeee not so good but the nems were awesome as usual 🙂 Best to stick to their Pho / Bun Bo Hue noodle in soups! Found out from my friends that I can move forward my 2nd vaccine shot appointment and I did! I got the 2nd jab on Saturday and so far so good…. Same as last time: very organised, professional and friendly staff 🙂 Many people there on the Sat morning but still got everything done in about 45 mins.
So I also tried that cervelas saucisson with pistachios. I cooked it up as per instructions and while the meat quality was good, it was kinda sour 😦 I don’t think it went bad but it was very disappointing!
Hanging out with the family was nice to catch up too 🙂 They are really good people; I feel grateful to know them and that we can be friends! I brought some saucisson from Lyon to share (That was super tasty!), gift for D, cakes from Flowers cafe, bbq burgers and salad and air fryer fries 😀
Been hanging out w/ flatmates a lot and they are a good group of lads 🙂 Respectful, chill and nice dudes. We usually end up eating together and hanging out around dinner, as we eat at similar times. The weekend was nice as we all ended up hanging out a bit more. I shared a bottle of rosé from Nimes w/ T and had a good long chat about world and cultures.
Then Saturday lunch, we tried some of A’s cheeses from Deux Chavanne: an aged brebis (very flavourful and interesting!), another hard-ish cheese that was tasty but simple (vache?) and a very, very aged Vieux Gouda that had been aged for 40 months! Very complex and unique flavours with toffee, caramel and burnt wood chips 😀
Saturday afternoon saw that I napped hard to catch up from lack of sleep due to the hot evenings. I missed the Hungary vs. France game (but apparently it was an unexpected draw) and we played a word game during apéro. Then we cooked Hong Kong style curry baby cuttlefish! 😀
Recipe: http://www.eatingclubvancouver.com/2008/12/hong-kong-style-curry-cuttlefish.html
- We used creme fraiche rather than evaporated milk
- we added fresh chillies (2.5 and it was very spicy eeps!)
- ~445g of cipions (means baby cuttlefish but maybe this is a local word?) – From Poissonerie BelloCQ beside the veggie market in Marché Victor Hugo… so fresh! 😀 )
- Regular oil used
- subbed maple syrup for sugar
- and went with water not broth
- added a sprinkle of ground white pepper too
Friendly bunch at the Seafood place. My packet got misplaced so he re-picked the Cipions again and gave me a handful extra 😀
Anyway, the recipe was good but I felt:
- the curry was too watery… I doubled the cornstarch slurry but still no success. May cut the water portion in 1/2 next time and slowly add from there..
- The cuttlefish were super fresh but very strong seafood-y smell. I’d wash again more thoroughly and pre-marinate with some ground black and white pepper and a touch of salt.
Still yummy on rice and had the cooked courgette + shitake mushrooms with oyster sauce: Deeelish!
Then a few people from the other coloc came over and we played a drinking game haha but then our music was too loud and we got a fine eeps! Luckily it wasn’t too too much oops
