I arrived on June 6 early in the day around noon and after a yummy lunch (see next post), I wandered around town. Sadly, due to having a big suitcase, I was not allowed into anywhere except restos or cafes dues to their stringent approach to terrorism.
So many gorgeous half-timbered buildings. It was like walking into a movie set. A favourite memory is when approach an intersection and then peer around the building and the street opens up to multicoloured, historically significant, unique buildings that curve around inviting you to follow them down history lane. It’s just so picturesque. The river encircling around the main centreville breathes life into the town to give it a glorious view and promote more cycling. You can see lots more of these buildings as well in Petite-France. No wonder it’s UNESCO-listed.
Love all the street art too. I think the particular shots below outside the Museum of Modern Art showcase the Blutch animation feature and they are so epic.
The Cathedral in centreville is also so amazing and it’s FREE entry too woo hoo! It’s so beautiful inside, as well as out. It’s monstrous. You’ll feel in awe and dwarfed by the size and weight of the history. It’s amazing to think of all the work done by hand for the stained glass windows, sculptures, painting… amazing.
I also went to Colmar for a quick lil day trip to visit the Musee Unterlinden. It was a lovely space and gorgeous art and relics. The coolest was probably Monet’s “Chariot of Death”. Lots going on in the painting and seemed like each character had their own story too. Very vivid. Cool old piano there as well. Very boxy. Apparently if you open the lid, it’s painted on the inside too! 😀 There was a big restorative project happening as well and that was cool to see and be featured to teach groups and the public about it.
Back in Strasbourg, the Vauban Dam was cool to see and you can walk on top of it too! Took a pano of the historic city 🙂
I also visited what felt like every single museum available in Strasbourg… 7 of them. I went to:
1. Palais Rohan (which itself on the outside wasn’t very impressive). The 4 below are located within the Palais Rohan.
1) Musee des Beaux-Arts: good. Enjoyed this and felt it was worth my time.
2) Musee des Arts decoratifs: great! So amazing seeing what the palais was like and all the decor, embellishments and paintings inside – Stunning. And look at that cool couch oo la la ❤
3) Musee Archeologique: okay.
4) Galerie Heitz: closed on the day I went.
2. Musee de l’Oeuvre Notre-Dame. Okay as well. Maybe old stone sculptures aren’t my thing.
3. Musee Historique: cool. Was in this old house with windy staircases and little offshoots to see things so that was cool. Great to see the history of Strasbourg.
4. Musee Alsacien: weird with the little comic inserted in amongst all the relics and history. Not a fan.
5. Musee d’Art moderne et contemporain (MAMCS). great! Awesome art and they had an exhibition for Blutch who was from Strasbourg so that was extra cool to see a local showcased.
TIP: Maybe this promotion was during the off-season but at the Palais Rohan, this one and only location, they sold a day pass (pass 1 jour) for €12 to see EVERYTHING on that list I wrote about plus more! It’s not on the website, it’s not sold in person at any other venue that I saw – Only the Palais Rohan reception desk. As each of those museums cost €6.50 each, the day pass is well worth it if you plan to go to 2+ places! Ask for this!
At night, this random kitty comes to the door and stares at me and I can see it go miaou. It’s so cute and looks so soft but it’s not my place – literally – to let it in so I just take photos of this lil visitor 🙂
Update: I had the door open to get some fresh air and guess who should invite himself straight in and make himself home… :p
